Txalaparta, the echo of a people

Txalaparta, the echo of a people

Synopsis:

The txalaparta is both a sound and a musical instrument that was banned during the Franco dictatorship, and whose ancestral origins remain shrouded in mystery.

In the 1970s, only two families remained who played it. Thanks to the succession of second-generation musicians, and despite being criticized by their mentors, they managed to rescue it from oblivion, bringing it out of the obscurity of their farmhouses. Today, third generations fuse the txalaparta with other instruments and artistic expressions, reviving it with renewed vigor.

Through the three generations, THE ECHO OF A PEOPLE offers a journey through the enigmatic past and an encounter with the present, where detractors and promoters of its evolution engage in dialogue—a clear example of the evolution of Basque society.
