Director Z, the seller of illusions

Director Z, the seller of illusions

Synopsis:

Director Z is the story of a filmmaker, a bohemian, an unconscious adventurer who lived his life outside the social norms of the time, risking everything to achieve his dream, only to be ultimately cut short by his own dream.

José María Zabalza was a filmmaker completely dedicated to the art of storytelling. But his promising start in Spanish cinema in the 1950s was cut short by Franco’s censorship. Despite the difficulties, Zabalza explored imaginative formulas in his film projects. Until his death in 1985, he made six short films and twenty-one feature films, published two books, and premiered five plays. This documentary explores the memories of his family and the anecdotes of his friends and collaborators, revealing the essence of a bohemian and an adventurer who lived his life outside the society of the time, risking everything to achieve his dream.

Oskar Tejedor directs this documentary dedicated to a dreamer and, by extension, to all those invisible dreamers whose work has shaped part of our culture.
